History

Fr. John J. Hogan arrived in Macon, Missouri in August of 1857. Fr. Hogan offered mass in homes until a small church was erected in 1860. In 1884, Union soldiers occupied the church and used the pews, altar and flooring for firewood and for defense ramparts. In 1866, the congregation built a church at Main Street and Rutherford. They remained there until 1875.

In 1875, the parish purchased a Presbyterian Church that became Immaculate Conception Church. Mass was celebrated at this location between 1875 and 1902 when a larger church was built on the same site.

The Immaculate Conception Parish purchased Colonel Frederick Blees townhouse in 1920. This building was located on the present church site. The first floor of the townhouse was used as the church. In 1924 the second floor was used for a school and convent.

In 1952, the parish purchased a doctor's residence located just east of the present church building. The residence was remodeled and additions made to what is still today the school building.

In 1957, the church was razed and the present church built. The new church was dedicated on May 5, 1957.

In 1974, the church was redecorated and the current stained glass windows were installed. The windows beautifully depict the Stations of the Cross. The largest stained glass window, located over the entrance depict the wondrous Nativity.

After Vatican 11, an increasingly active laity became involved in parish council, Oktoberfest, parish fund raiser, Cursillo, Marriage Encounter and Journey in Faith spiritual renewal.

In 1985, Bernie Toll was ordained as Macon's first permanent Deacon. Macon currently has two active deacons serving the local catholic community, Rev. Mr. Lloyd Collins and Rev. Mr. Bruce Mobley.

Fr. Bill Peckman is currently pastor of Immaculate Conception Church. He enriches our lives by sharing the Love of Christ and Sacred Scripture and Tradition with our church family.

Our catholic school, established in 1924 by Fr. T.J. Barrett, continues to stand the test of time providing a faith-based education for students Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Our school consistently yields some of the top students locally and in the surrounding areas. Between the years on 2007-2019, 19% of the top 10 graduates from Macon R-1 are Immaculate Conception School's alumni. Many of our students attending surrounding area schools such as Bevier, Atlanta and Shelbina are also at the top of their graduating class. This is a big achievement given that we account for less than 55 of the students attending high school. Recently four of these students have been Valedictorian and Salutatorian in just the past few years.

The 2022-2023 school year marks the 99th year of Catholic Education at Immaculate Conception. Our desire to continue providing a faith-based, academically strong, Christian environment will strengthening spirituality through Scripture, Sacraments, Church and morality is our mission.

Our Church, parish and school has faced many social and economic challenges over the years. However, we stand strong in our conviction and foundation. We continue to grow, change and advance with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the support of our parish families, leadership of pastors and our local community who has enable Immaculate Conception Church and School to continue as a source of faith for Macon County Catholics.
